Jewellery rarely breaks from a single event. It wears out slowly because it is stored badly. The fix is cheap and takes ten minutes.

Why one big box is a bad idea

Diamonds scratch gold. Gold scratches gold. Chains knot against each other. Stones knock against each other in a drawer. None of this is visible at first, but over years the pieces lose their polish and prongs loosen.

The right setup

  • A fabric-lined box with separate slots or rolls.
  • Soft pouches for travel — one piece per pouch.
  • A hook or stand for daily-worn pieces so they are not tossed on a bedside table.
  • Anti-tarnish strips in the box if you own silver (less of an issue for gold and platinum).

Humidity and temperature

Bathrooms are the worst place to keep jewellery — steam accelerates tarnish and loosens prongs. Keep your box in a bedroom drawer, not on the bathroom shelf. Avoid direct sunlight, which fades some coloured gems.

Travel

Use a jewellery roll, not a washbag. If you fly, put jewellery in your carry-on, not hold luggage. Keep the insurance and certificate details separate from the pieces themselves.
