The 4Cs are the universal grading system for diamonds, invented by GIA in the 1950s. You have probably seen the letters and numbers on a jewellery website without understanding what they mean. Here is the honest version.
The order that actually matters
Most people read the 4Cs in the order the letters suggest — cut, colour, clarity, carat. In practice, cut is by far the most important, then carat, then clarity, then colour. A poorly cut stone looks dull no matter how clear or white it is.
Cut
Cut is not the shape. It is how precisely the angles and facets are ground. An "Excellent" or "Ideal" cut bounces light back out the top of the stone; a "Fair" cut leaks light through the sides and bottom. If you remember nothing else, remember this: always choose the best cut you can afford. Drop a carat size before you drop a cut grade.
Colour
Diamond colour is graded from D (completely colourless) to Z (noticeably yellow). On a white gold or platinum setting, the jump from D to G is nearly invisible to the naked eye, but the price difference is large. On a yellow gold setting, even an H or I grade looks white because the warm metal masks any tint. A common UK shopper's sweet spot is G or H.
Clarity
Clarity measures internal inclusions (tiny natural marks). Grades run FL (flawless) down to I1–I3 (included, visible to the naked eye). For a solitaire viewed at arm's length, VS2 or SI1 is usually perfectly clean. Inclusions are often placed at the edges of the stone where prongs cover them — ask to see the stone loose, not just set.
Carat
Carat is weight, not size. One carat is 0.2 grams. Two stones of the same carat can look very different depending on their cut and shape. Oval and marquise shapes look larger for the same carat because of their elongated surface. Round brilliants tend to look smaller because a lot of the weight sits in the pavillion (bottom).

What about lab-grown and moissanite?
The 4Cs framework was built for mined diamonds. Lab-grown diamonds are graded on the same system but cost 40–60% less. Moissanite is a completely different material and is graded on its own terms (GRA reports usually list carat, cut and a colour range).
